Abstract
In the production of paper, or shaped moulded fibrous products, &c., the fibres, e.g. of asbestos, glass, mineral wool, animal hair, nylon or kraft, rag, jute, hemp, or sisal &c. are coated with an organic binder, e.g. of asphalt, tar, bitumen, pitch, or paraffin, carnauba, montan, petrolatum, microcrystalline, amorphous petroleum, or chlorinated wax, or rosin, or 50 to 70% butadienestyrene or 50 to 80% butadiene-acrylonitrile or neoprene, or polymers of butadiene, isoprene, or chloroprene, or styrene-acrylonitrile copolymers, or phenol-, or alkyl-phenol-, or melamine-, or alkyl-urea-formaldehyde, or polyvinyl, or polystyrene, or polyacrylate or polymethacrylate resins, or esters of rosin with polyhydric alcohols or coumarone resins, or polymdene resins, or polytetrafluorethylene &c. in a dispersion containing a sulphonated anionic or a nonionic emulsifying agent, and also containing about 2 to 20 parts of a water-soluble salt of an aliphatic polycarboxylic acid of at least 36 carbon atoms, e.g. di- or tri-linoleic acid per 100 parts of binder. Examples of anionic emulsifying agents are sodium lauryl sulphate, sulphonated castor oil, sulphonated lignin, or salts of alkyl aryl sulphonates &c. and of nonionic agents are polyethylene glycol-substituted maleic acid esters, and manitan and sorbitan mono-esters of palmitic acids and their ethylene oxide condensation products, and alkyl aryl polyether alcohols. An Example (3) mentions chrysotile asbestos, papermakers' alum, asphalt, and the potassium salt of dilinoleic acid. Another Example (1) mentions crocidolite asbestos and polytetrafluoroethylene, the product being chemically-resistant and suitable for gasketing after pressing and sintering at 700 DEG F.ALSO:In the production of paper, or shaped moulded fibrous products, &c. the fibres, e.g. of asbestos, glass, mineral wool, animal hair, nylon or kraft, rag, jute, hemp, or sisal &c. are coated with an organic binder, e.g. of asphalt, tar, bitumen, pitch, or paraffin, carnauba, montan, petrolatum, microcrystalline, amorphous petroleum, or chlorinated wax, or rosin, or 50 to 70% butadiene-styrene or 50 to 80% butadiene-acrylonitrile or neoprene, or polymers of butadiene, isoprene, or chloroprene, or styrene-acrylonitrile copolymers, or phenol-, or alkyl-phenol-, or melamine-, or alkyl-urea-formaldehyde, or polyvinyl, or polystyrene, or polyacrylate or polymethacrylate resins, or esters of rosin with polyhydric alcohols or coumarone resins, or polymdene resins, or polytetrafluoroethylene &c. in a disperson containing a sulphanated anionic or a nonionic emulsifying agent, and also containing about 2 to 20 parts of a water-soluble salt of an aliphatic polycarboxylic acid of at least 36 carbon atoms, e.g. di- or tri-linoleic acid per 100 parts of binder.
