Abstract

A process for carbo-nitriding metals, particularly ferrous metals, in baths containing alkali metal cyanide and alkali metal cyanate comprises providing 0,5 to 10% of the total cyanate as n-cyanate. The bath may comprise 20-40% cyanate calculated as potassium cyanate, and 30-60% cyanide calculated as sodium cyanide, the balance being alkali metal carbonate. The bath may also contain alkali metal chloride. It is stated that the invention results in improvements in the fatigue strength of iron alloys.
