Abstract

891,295. Coating by dipping. UNITED STATES STEEL CORPORATION., June 23, 1959 [June 23, 1958), No. 21544/59. Class 82(2). A method of hot dip coating a continuous metallic strand, particularly steel wire with aluminium, comprises applying shock impulses to the cleaned strand adjacent its point of entry to a bath of molten metal, maintaining the strand under sufficiently low tension to prevent the formation of standing waves, and dampening the vibration before the strand leaves the bath, the coating being permitted to freeze with a smooth surface while the strand passes from the bath in an upward direction. As shown, coil 2 of wire S on reel 4 is fed to alkali tank 6, rinse 8, acid cleaning tank 10, rinse 12, hot rinse 14, drier 16 and under resiliently mounted hold down sheave 18 to impact mechanism V which comprises two parallel discs 52 separated by horizontal bars 54. The discs 52 are rotated at such a rate as to create, by the impact of bars 54 on the strand, at least 40 shock impulses per second, an acceleration between 20 and 5000 g. and innumerable frequencies in the range of 80-10,000 c.p.s. The strand then passes through tube 22 filled with natural gas from inlet 24, through bath 20 of molten coating metal at at least 40 ft per second to give an immersion time of less than 8 seconds, under sinker 26, and up to steady bar 28, to gas wipe 30 and sheave 34 and on to re-coiler 40.
