Abstract

890,946. Packages; cartons. LORD BALTIMORE PRESS Inc. March 21, 1958, No. 9149/58. Classes 18 and 94(1). The end closure. flaps of tubular cartons are sealed by thermoplastic adhesive applied to them after preheating of the flaps and caused to flow by heat and pressure during sealing. The cuts separating the flaps stop short of the hinge line so that outfolding of the flaps causes tears which assist in tight sealing. A portion 19 of one flap is left free to facilitate opening. Cartons, which may be wax coated, are carried beneath closure means by a conveyer 30, the flaps being previously folded so that flaps 12, 13a extend outwards and flaps 8 are folded inwards. The flaps are preheated by means 24 and have thermoplastic adhesive applied by a roller 27. Fixed folders 28, 29 then fold in flaps 12, 13a, heat and pressure are applied by means 32 and the sealed carton is cooled by a member 33. Both ends may be sealed simultaneously (not shown).
