Abstract

Polypropylene and copolymers of propylene with a minor proportion of another olefin, are stabilized by incorporating in the polymer two stabilizers each present in an amount of from 0,0005 to 5% by weight of the propylene content of the polymer, the stabilizers being selected respectively from a beta-thioether of propionic acid or an ester of propionic acid, and known heat-stabilizers for polyolefins. Known heat-stabilizers mentioned are 4,41-thiobis (6-tert.-butyl-m-cresol), N-(p-hydroxyphenyl)-morpholine, tri-tert.-butyl-p-phenol, 4,41-butylidene-bis-(6-tert.-butyl-m-cresol), 2,21-methylene-bis-(4-methyl-6-tert.-butyl phenol), 4,41-butylidene-bis-(6-tert.-butyl-3-methyl phenol), and phenols of the structure, <FORM:0890468/IV (a)/1> wherein R1, R2 and R3 are the same or different alkyl groups. The beta-thioethers and esters are all of the general formula ROOCCH2CH2S-X in which R is hydrogen or an alkyl or cycloalkyl radical and X is a hydrocarbon group, an oxygenated-hydrocarbon group, a sulphur-hydrocarbon group, or a sulphur and oxygenated-hydrocarbon group, or a sulphur- and nitrogen-hydrocarbon group. Exemplified thio-compounds are 3-benzothiazyl mercaptopropionic acid, and dilauryl and distearyl beta-thiodipropionate. The stabilizers may be added to the polymers in the solid or molten state, or to a solution or suspension of the polymer in an organic solvent. The beta-thioethers and thioesters are preferable used in conjunction with propionate-improvers, i.e. lecithin, glycerol, tyrosine, citric acid and/or tartaric acid, or the synergistic combinations described and named in U.S.A. Specification 2,564,106. Specification 777,538 also is referred to.
