Abstract

889,835. Acoustic couplings. BENDIX CORPORATION. Dec. 8, 1958 [Dec. 30, 1957], No. 39500/58. Class 40(8). In order to prevent radiation from the liquidimmersed non - working surface of an electroacoustic transducer, the acoustic coupling between the face and the liquid is reduced by means of pressure-release means situated near the face. The transducer shown comprises a magnetostrictive driver 10a coupled to a radiating head 16 by means of a cylindrical motion-amplifier 10b of the type described in Specification 868,982. The amplifier and the head are immersed in liquid held within a tank 12. Radiation from the annular back face 17 of the head is prevented by a gas-filled toroid 18 of rubber or plastic material which is held in position near the face 17 either by its own buoyancy or by a framework 21. The toroid does not contact the whole surface of the face but is everywhere within one quarter-wavelength of the face. In a modification (Fig. 4, not shown), an axially elongated toroid which extends from the face 17 to flange 14 is used. A solid toroid made of impervious cellular material, e.g. sponge rubber, may be used.
