889,448. Electrophotographic processes. KOLB, O. K. (Haloid Co.). June 5, 1958, No. 18010/58. Class 98(2). In a magnetic brush for applying developing powder to a surface bearing an electrostatic latent image, the magnetic carrier particles adhere to a non-magnetic sheath surrounding the permanent or induced magnet and the sheath prevents any particles from reaching the magnet during withdrawal therefrom. In one form, (Fig. 1, not shown) a bar magnet is enclosed in an aluminium, brass or glass sheath of test-tube shape provided with a down-turned collar of sufficient capacity to accommodate the particles of the magnetic brush clinging to the lower end of the tube. Thus, when the magnet is withdrawn, the brush particles are all trapped in the collar. As shown, the brush particles 17 are carried on a cylindrical brass sheath 18 having non- magnetic end flanges 20 and are swept across the electrostatic latent image bearing surface of plate 16 by rotating shaft 4 carrying skew ferro magnetic toothed discs 7 which are magnetised by permanent Alnico magnets 8, 8<SP>1</SP> through soft iron pieces 10, 11, 11<SP>1</SP>, 12 and 12'. The plate 16 is simultaneously moved through the apparatus. In a modified form the discs 7 are not toothed and the cylinder 18 is arranged to be rotated with the discs. After removing bearing blocks 6, 12, the discs 7 can be removed endwise from the cylinder 18 and the magnetic particles are prevented from adhering to the discs by a flange 20.
