889,296. Ion-exchange apparatus. PERMUTIT CO. Ltd. June 17, 1958 [June 17, 1957], No. 19037 /57. Class 46. In ion-exchange apparatus in which a suspension of ion-exchange beads in water must be passed from a container 1, in which water is treated, to a container 9, in which the beads are regenerated, a pipe 7, 8 of large bore (at least 1 inch diameter) leads from the bottom of container 1 to a T-piece 13, one limb 14 of which carries a strainer 16 through which water, but not the beads, can pass, while the other limb 15 leads into the container 9 through a valve 17. Water to be treated enters the container 1 through a pipe 2 and leaves through a pipe 4 controlled by a valve 5. When beads in container 1 are to be regenerated,the water pressure in container 1 is caused to force the beads into pipe 8, the water passing through the strainer 16 and the beads being held against the strainer. The valve 17 is then opened to carry the beads into container 9, wherein they are treated with regenerant supplied through a pipe 21 and rinsing water supplied through a pipe 26. To return the beads from container 9 to container 1, valves 17, 22 and 27 are closed, valves 11 and 25 are opened, and water pressure from pipe 24 forces the beads through pipe 10 into container 1, thereby expelling another batch of beads from container 1 into pipe 8.
