Abstract

888,957. Travelling wave tubes. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. June 6, 1958 [June 8, 1957], No. 18150/58. Class 39(1) A travelling wave tube including a helix mounted within a precision bored glass envelope portion and an electron collector electrode sealed to one end of the glass envelope portion and having an external surface portion for radial location of the travelling wave tube in external apparatus, the external surface portion being accurately concentric with the bore of the glass envelope portion in which the electron collector electrode includes an internal conical member which projects towards the other end of the envelope portion and whose axis is accurately concentric with the said external surface portion providing means for accurately centering the electron collector electrode with respect to the glass envelope portion while they are being sealed together. The tube is mounted accurately in a magnetic focusing device of cylindrical form by means of two metal rings 12, 16 one of which has a turned up edge 13 to engage the inner surface of the magnet and the other of which engages an extension of the magnet and also has a radial extension serving as a stop which accurately locates the travelling wave tube axially. The glass envelope 10 has an accurately dimensioned and calibrated inner surface as has the coil or permanent magnet 18 and the members 13, 16 are accurately dimensioned and accurately coaxial, the axes of 10, 13, 16 coinciding accurately with one another and with the axis of the magnet 18. In assembly the seal between glass envelope 10 and sheet metal sleeve 12 is made on an ordinary sealing lathe after which the composite body is slipped on a mandrel inserted in a lathe and centering ring 13 is turned down. The collector 8 is sealed to glass envelope 10 by a centering mandrel 15, Fig. 2 using conical extension 17 as a centralising device (fits into a conical hole in the mandrel 15). Projections 16, 17 are in the same plane to get so it is stated 10 and 8 on the same axis. The pressed glass base 14 is welded by a roller seam welding machine or soldered to metal sleeve 12.
