888,946. Welding by fusion. CYCLOMAGIC Inc. April 27, 1960, No. 14679/60. Class 83 (4). In an arc welding device for making a circumferential weld on a cylindrical workpiece, a frame attachable to the workpiece has an annular track for a carriage supporting the welding-torch and rotatable about the workpiece by a motor mounted on the frame. The torch 17 is rotated through 372 degrees and during the overlap the current is reduced. The frame 25 is in two hinged parts which may be secured to one of the pipes 13, 14 to be butt welded. The carriage 16 is in the form of two semi-circular segments of a gear carrying an odd number of rollers 46 which when the segments are connected together run in a groove 47 in the frame 25. The motor 18 on the frame 25 has a pinion 54 engaging the toothed rim of the carriage 16. A gas shielded torch 17 is carried by a bracket on one of the segments. The welding generator, control panel and gas bottle 21 for supplying argon, helium, nitrogen or carbon dioxide to the torch 17 and to the inside of the pipes 13, 14 are carried by a trolley 19. Highfrequency current is used for initiating the welding arc.
