Class 39(3) In a device for electrically heating a spouted bed of electrically conducting particulate solids loosely packed in a vertical cylindrical casing 1, closed at the top by a cover 2 through which passes a plurality of electrodes 3 and a gas outlet 7 (Fig. 2, not shown) and closed at the bottom by a member in contact with a bottom electrode 8 apertured to receive gas inlet tubes 10, the passage of the gas through the particles gives rise to spouts 12 each of which are associated with a corresponding electrode 3 which makes contact with the dilute suspension of the particles in a spout.
