[Also in Groups XIX and XXXV] In a continuous-rod machine, and crosssectional size of the cigarette rod R is gauged by the amount of air which escapes from a chamber 8 by passing between the rod and orifices 9. Due to transient adhesive slip on rod formation, the rod size varies with its degree of filling, which is consequently indicated by the air pressure in the chamber 8, and this pressure is used to control the rate of the machine tobacco feed or to cause rejection or marking of cigarettes formed from unsatisfactory rod portions. To this end, air supplied via ducts 12, 15 to the chamber 8 acts via a diaphragm 3 and peg 24 on an electrical contact 25 coacting with contacts 26, 27 the spacings of which relative to the contact 25 and to each other are adjustable by a wedge 32, slidable on a blade 33 by a rack and pinion (not shown) operated by a knob 40, and movable sideways by deflection of the blade 33 itself by a screwed knob 36a. The air pressure used, e.g. 1¢ lb. per square inch, is insufficient to damage the softest cigarette normally acceptable. A balancing air pressure is supplied to the rear face of the diaphragm 3 via a line 23 including a non-return valve. The apparatus is initially set using a standard rod of metal &c., preferably light enough to float centrally in the orifices 9. In a machine for making mouthpiece cigarettes, the apparatus can be used to keep the rod R to a given mouthpiece size, e.g. by adjustment of a rod heater means like that of Specification 284,819. In Fig. 4 (not shown), the contacts 26, 27 may coact with a second diaphragm flexed by the diaphragm 3 via an air relay and integrating chamber, and control a reversible electric motor actuating the regulator of a variable speed gear, as in Specification 618,774 or 860,185, in the tobacco feed hopper drive. In a modification, in which the diaphragm 3 itself coacts with contacts 26, 27 adjustable via gear-operated screws thereon, both sides of the diaphragm are subjected to the same source of air so as to cancel out supply pressure variations.
