Abstract

887,771. Drying articles. FAN SYSTEM S Ltd. June 7, 1960 [June 6, 1959], No. 19430/59. Class 34(2) In a method of drying articles, e.g. unbaked bricks, air is blown over the articles by one or more fan or blower units which travel to and fro along an overhead support from which they are suspended, the traverse movement being obtained from a constantly rotating motor on one or more of the units driving a sprocket which engages a complemental double-sided toothed member on the support, the motor being mounted for movement about a vertical axis and being caused to swing about the axis at the end of each movement along the support to transfer the sprocket from one side of the toothed member to the other. Each fan unit comprises a fan casing 52, Fig. 8, having a fan motor and fan 29, 30, which casing is adapted at its top for suspension from a wheeled carrier 28. The carriers are connected together in tandem by rigid links so as to be reciprocally driven along an overhead mono-rail 26 in a drying chamber 1, Fig. 2, in which the bricks are either stacked in bays or positioned in wheeled trucks by means of a non-reversible driving motor 38 mounted by a frame 39 on the carrier at one end of the line of carriers. The motor 38 drives a sprocket 41 which meshes with a roller chain 43 secured to the underside of the monorail to move the fan units and the frame 39 is pivotally mounted about a vertical axis so that the sprocket is switched around the end of the chain at the end of a traverse to travel along the other side of the chain. The pivotal movement is caused by contact of a bolt 49 on the frame 39 engaging a V-shaped part 45 of a spring stop member mounted at each end of the monorail. The fan units circulate flue gases from a kiln and/or heated air from trunking 12, 13, 14 throughout the drying bays either by extending downwardly between adjacent rows of bricks so that the air is discharged through outlets 54 laterally towards the bricks, or the units are positioned above the bricks to direct the air downwardly on to the bricks.
