Abstract

In carrying out catalytic gas phase chemical reactions, e.g partial oxidation of benzene and naphthalene to maleic anhydride and phthalic anhydride respectively, in which the reactants are capable of forming an explosive mixture, a sufficient portion of the product gases after removal of the desired reaction product is recycled together with fresh reactants to ensure that the composition of the mixture fed to the reaction zone is outside the explosive limits under all conditions. The recycle gas, still at or near the pressure and temperature at which it left the reaction p zone, may be mixed with the required proportion of one reactant, e.g. air, and a second reactant, e.g. benzene, injected thereafter. A calculation of the proportions of recycle gas and reactants to be used is given in relation to the oxidation of benzene to maleic acid.ALSO:In carrying out catalytic gas phase chemical reactions, e.g partial oxidation of benzene and naphthalene to maleic anhydride and phthalic anhydride respectively, in which the reactants are capable of forming an explosive mixture, a sufficient portion of the product gases after removal of the desired reaction product is recycled together with fresh reactants to ensure that the composition of the mixture fed to the reaction zone is outside the explosive limits under all conditions. A calculation of the proportions of recycle gas and reactants to be used is given in relation to the oxidation of benzene to maleic acid.
