Abstract

886,999. Piles; boring earth &c. COELUS, G. J. Aug. 19, 1960 [Aug. 21, 1959; March 1, 1960], No. 28841/60. Classes 68(2) and 85. A concrete pile is formed by a drill tube 1 with a screw-shaped bit 2 having a movable valve 4 which is closed during the downward movement of the drill, concrete being forced therethrough during the upward movement. Working via position A (Fig. 1) the bit is screwed into solid ground 3 (position B). During upward movement to position C the valve 4 opens and concrete from the tube 1 is forced therethrough. Subsequent screwing downwardly closes the valve again and the concrete is forced away to form an enlarged foot 5, as at D. Further enlargements may be formed above the foot as at E. With the pile thus cast up to ground level a reinforcement 7 may be lowered along guide means 6 (see F). The tube 1 continues into the bit 2 (Fig. 4), the valve portion 28 of which is fixed to a stem 23 having a screw 27 in a threaded casing 24 supported by members 25. A lug 26 on the valve stem 23 extends beyond the screw thread 22 of the bit offers resistance to the ground and according as the bit is screwed upwardly or downwardly controls the opening and closing of the valve. The drilling rig (Fig. 2) comprises a winch 9 for a cable 10 secured to a gear case 14 on the drill tube 1, which gear case is secured against rotation while being movable up and down in a shaft 17. The gear case contains a motor-driven worm-wheel mechanism. The motor and the winch 9 may be so controlled that the screw bit 2 will move up and down in the ground in accordance with the pitch of its thread.
