Abstract

Glass objects, e.g. tubing, fibres, bottles and sheets, are coated by applying thereto, as by spraying, pouring, brushing, dipping or vapourising and condensing, a composition comprising a solution or emulsion in a volatile liquid carrier of block copolymers having the formula (1) <FORM:0886683/III/1> wherein R1 is a hydrocarbon radical having the valency of x, R and RII are hydrocarbon radicals, RIII is an alkyl or trihydrocarbonylsilyl radical and terminates a siloxane chain when a is 1 or 2, x is 1 or 2, y is an integer of at least 3, n is 2, 3 or 4, a is 1, 2 or 3 and z is an integer of at least 5, or the formula (2) R DEG [(R2SiO)y]d[(CnH2nO)x]mR DEG wherein R and n are as defined above, R DEG is a hydrocarbon or hydrocarbonoxy radical, x is at least 5, y is at least 2 and the sum d+m is 2 or 3 (see Group IV(a)), and evaporating the liquid carrier from the applied composition. Liquid carriers specified are water, ethanol, other alcohols, ethers, esters and ketones. In examples, bottles are coated with copolymer (1). The coatings may be produced by spraying aqueous solutions on heated bottles. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 802,688 and 804,369.ALSO:A composition for coating glass objects comprises a solution or emulsion in a volatile liquid carrier of block copolymers having the formula (1) <FORM:0886683/IV (a)/1> wherein R1 is a hydrocarbon radical having the valency of x, R and R11 are hydrocarbon radicals, R111 is an alkyl or trihydrocarbonylsilyl radical and terminates a siloxane chain when a is 1 or 2, x is 1 or 2, y is an integer of at least 3, n is 2, 3 or 4, a is 1, 2 or 3 and z is an integer of at least 5, or the formula (2) <FORM:0886683/IV (a)/2> wherein R and n are as defined above R0 is a hydrocarbon or hydrocarbonoxy radical, x is an integer of at least 5, y is an integer of at least 2, and d and m are integers whose sum is 2 or 3. The compositions usually employed are mixtures of block copolymers so that y and z will have average values. Liquid carriers specified are water, ethanol, other alcohols, ethers, esters and ketones. Copolymers of the formula (1) are used in the examples. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 802,688 and 804,369.
