Abstract

886,650. Dielectric loss measurement. TESLA, NARODNI PODNIK. March 5, 1959 [March 6, 1958], No. 7683/59. Drawings to Specification. Class 37. Apparatus for measuring the loss factor of a dielectric comprises a capacitance having a fixed electrode and a micrometer adjustable moving electrode between which a specimen is clamped. The capacitor is connected to the terminals of an admittance component meter, and a variable parallel inductance is connected directly to the capacitor plates independently of the admittance meter connections. Adjustment of the inductance for zero - imaginary component neutralizes the reactive admittance components of the capacitance and its leads, so that the instrument measures the conductance G 1 representing the loss in the sample and those in the insulation and resistance of the capacitor assembly. The sample is removed and the plates separated until the imaginary component is again zero, and the conductance G 2 represents the losses in the capacitor assembly alone. Then the conductance G x due to losses in the dielectric is given by G x = G 1 - G 2 and the capacitance C x due to the dielectric material is calculated so that the loss factor is given by A mathematical analysis is given.
