886,588. Hydraulic accumulators. PARKERHANNIFIN CORPORATION. May 3, 1960 [May 6, 1959], No. 15573/60. Class 69 (2). [Also in Group XVIII] A head structure 3 for an accumulator or the like comprises a readially-extending flange portion 21, an internally-threaded skirt portion 12, and a packing retainer ring 17 forming with the transverse wall 14 of the flange portion a radially outwardly opening groove for a packing ring 23. The retainer ring 17 is located with slight axial and radial play on a projection 15 by a snap ring 16 and is formed with passages 24 whereby fluid-pressure in the accumulator presses the O-sectioned packing ring against the transverse wall 14 of the head structure and the bore 2 of the cylinder of the accumulator, the bore having a chamfer 21; the fluid-pressure also acts to press the ring against the bore and chamfer by passing through the gap between the wall 14 and ring 17. The accumulator, which may be hydropneumatic, has a hollow piston 4 dividing the accumulator into chambers 5, 6 having ports 9 for connection to an air supply and an hydraulic system. The piston, which may be of light alloy or aluminium, is provided with a sealing ring 7 and guide rings 8 of polytetrafluorethylene or the like engaging the bore 2 of the cylinder which may be of steel. Recesses 25 limit the minimum volume of the chambers 5, 6, the chamber 5 being of greater volume as a result of the hollow piston.
