Abstract
886,223. Packaging-machines; packages. PIKE, G. L. Jan. 15, 1958, No. 1490/58. Class 94(1). A machine for making bags and filling them with articles such as potato chips comprises means for tubing a web and sealing it transversely, and jaws in addition to the sealing jaws for engaging the tube after filling to break up any chips in the sealing area. The bags may be inflated by air prior to sealing. The chips are fed by a conveyer 93 to a weighing hopper 90 from which they are blown by an air jet 95 into a funnel 24 about which the package tube is being formed. A further jet 107 and a plunger 104 may assist passage of the chips to the sealed base of the tube. The tube is fed downwards by vertically reciprocating sealing jaws, 26, 27 bearing cutting means 40, 43, but before sealing, parallel bars 66, 67 slideable on rods 70 close together and retract to pattern the tube and break up any chips present in the scaling area. Air from the nozzle 107, then straightens the tube and the jaws 26, 27 rise, raising the chip breaking assembly with them and seal and sever the packages. Operation of the package forming mechanism is initiated by the hopper 90 tripping to close a switch 112. In a variation of the above arrangement, Figs. 7-10, (not shown) the nozzle 107 is omitted and the plunger replaced by an air pipe moveable along the axis of the tube and having a sealing disc, enabling a pressure to be built up in the sealed bag. A so inflated bag is stated to protect the contents against crushing.
