A knife block for matrix composing and line-casting machines comprises a slide carrying the line trimming knife to be adjusted to the required point size, a rotatable disc carrying adjusting screws of different lengths for the adjustment of the slide, and a manually operable common member for lifting the slide away from the adjusting stops, rotating the disc and moving the slide back to the stops, the common member being a hand lever rockable in two planes, movement in one plane effecting the movements of the slide and movement in the other plane effecting rotation of the disc. The movable knife 1, Figs. I and 2, co-operating with the fixed knife 1<SP>1</SP>, is carried, adjustably by means of a screw 6, on a slide 4 slidable on a body 9 and pressed by a spring 40 through a body 13 against a selected one of a series of variably projecting set screws 10, 10<SP>1</SP>, &c., in an adjusting disc 11 formed with bearing jaws 21 pivotally supporting an operating lever 19 having a tooth 18 engaging one of a series of teeth 17, 17<SP>1</SP>, &c. on a fixed disc 15. The slide 4 is clamped by a nose 31 of an arm 30 of a lever 27, 30 pivoted at 28, the arm 27 carrying a screw 26 abutting a conical part 25 of a bolt 24 to which the lever 19 is pivoted by a pin-and-slot connection 22, 23. To adjust the knife I according to point size, the lever 19 is first moved clockwise as viewed in Fig. 2, thereby releasing itself from the tooth 17 and moving the bolt 24 axially to the left. The shape of the part 25 releases the pressure of the nose 31 to release the slide, which is moved to the left in Fig. 2 against the spring 40 by a curved piece 33 on the bolt 24 engaging a pin 34 on the slide, to relieve the pressure on the screw 10. The lever 19 is then rotated about the common axis of the discs 11, 15 and the bolt 24, rotating the bolt, and rotating the disc 11 to bring a different set screw into alignment with the body 13. The lever 19 is then moved counter-clockwise to engage a different tooth in the disc 15, to release the pin 34 so that the spring 40 brings the slide to the right in Fig. 2 until the body 13 engages the selected screw, and to re-clamp the slide in its new position.
