Abstract

Polymers and copolymers of butadiene are made by polymerizing butadiene alone, or in conjunction with another ethylenically unsaturated monomer such as styrene or another conjugated diene, in the presence of a catalyst prepared by bringing together a component A, comprising a product obtained by the reaction at a temperature below 150 DEG C. of a titanium tetrahalide and an aluminium trialkyl, and a component B comprising an aluminium monoalkyl dihalide. The atomic ratio of titanium in A to aluminium in component B is between 1:1 and 1:20. The preparation of component A is preferably effected in a hydrocarbon diluent which may be subsequently used as the polymerization medium. The butadiene may be polymerized in the liquid or gaseous state. The polymerization may be effected batchwise or continuously. In the example, component A is made by reacting titanium tetrachloride in iso-octane with aluminium triethyl, adding benzene and aluminium monoethyl dichloride and then effecting the polymerization of butadiene by introducing it as a gas into the catalyst mixture. The polymers have a predominantly trans -1, 4 configuration. Specification 789,781 is referred to.
