Abstract

A catalyst for polymerizing ethylene comprises (a) CrO3 supported on a silica-alumina base, the supported CrO3 having been activated by fluidizing in air at a temperature of at least 1,200 DEG F. and (b) an aluminium trialkyl, the alkyl groups containing up to 8 carbon atoms. The catalyst components may be mixed in an inert liquid such as cyclohexane (other hydrocarbons are also mentioned), or aluminium trialkyl vapour may be condensed on the activated supported CrO3. The polymerization reaction is preferably carried out continuously and in presence of a solvent for the polymer, but polymerization in bulk may also be effected, e.g., in a batch process in which catalyst is mixed with preformed polyethylene.
