Abstract

884,421. Riveting. STEELS & BUSKS Ltd. Nov. 13, 1959 [Nov. 24, 1958], No. 37743/58. Class 83 (4). A riveting machine is driven by a rotary motor 8 which is connected to the riveting device 4, 5 through a mechanical one-cycle clutch 9. The clutch is engaged by the movement of the armature of a solenoid, contained in a housing 38. The solenoid is operated through a relay 42 controlled by a microswitch 39 which is adjacent the work support 13, so that the machine operates when the work is correctly positioned and then depressed. The driving member of the clutch comprises a pulley 20 which is driven by a belt 22 and which has a boss 23 and a ring of pins 24. The driven member of the clutch comprises a head 25 which is keyed to a shaft 7 and which carries a pawl 26 which is urged outwards by a spring- loaded plunger 28. The pawl has an extension 29 which is engaged by a bolt 30 and holds the pawl in the inward position against the plunger 28. The bolt can move axially of the shaft 7 in the housing 31, and is biased by a spring 35 towards the pulley 20, but cannot rotate with the shaft 7. Co-operating with the bolt is a catch 33 pivoted to a link 34 which can also slide in the housing 31, and which is connected to the solenoid by a draw-bar 37. When the solenoid is energized the catch 33 draws the bolt 30 in the direction of the arrow A (Fig. 3), the pawl 26 moves outwards and is engaged by one of the pins 24, so that the shaft is driven. As the shaft rotates a cam 36 engages the catch 33 and moves it out of engagement with the bolt 30, which springs forward and engages the extension 29 of the pawl 26 and forces the pawl inwards so that the drive ceases.
