Abstract

Compositions suitable for use as floor or wall coverings comprise from 50-95% by weight of a fibrous and/or non-fibrous filler, and 50-5% of a resinous polymeric binder, consisting wholly or partly, e.g. from 1-15% of the total weight, of a resinous amorphous or isotactic polymer or copolymer of propylene. The binder may include resins such as petroleum, coumarone, polystyrene, and naphthalene-formaldehyde resins, resinous copolymers of styrene-butadiene, resinous cyclopentadiene polymers and asphaltic bitumen and/or pitch, or rubbery polyethylene, polyisobutylene, isobutylene-butadiene or -isoprene copolymers, or natural rubber. Vulcanizing or cross-linking agents, e.g. dicumyl peroxide, and extending oils or plasticizers may also be present. Examples describe amorphous and/or isotactic polypropylene alone or with the resinous or rubbery polymers or copolymers compoundded at elevated temperatures using a masterbatch technique with fillers comprising asbestos fibres, powdered limestone and titanium dioxide, and extended to form sheets which may be cut for tiles or calendered to form a wall or floor covering.
