Abstract
883,989. Mixing fluids in conduits. ONDERZOCKINGSINSTITUUT RESEARCH N. V. July 7, 1959 [July 8, 1958], No. 23379/59. Class 86. Streams of fluid are mixed by means of apparatus which divides each stream into an equal number of partial streams, which are recombined at junctions to each of which are partial stream from each main stream is led. In an example of the method in which two streams are each divided into two partial streams, the apparatus is built up of units 12 having long and short tongues, Fig. 2, which are formed from flat rectangular plates. Such units together with others which are their mirror images are interlocked to form an assembly. Fig. 3 (not shown) which is slid into a conduit of square cross-sections. The tongues of the units then constitutes vanes and walls defining passages for the fluid flowing through the conduit; certain spaces are totally enclosed by the long vanes and the outer walls of the conduit, see Fig. 4. The incoming fluid is divided by the partitions 19 units two main streams I, II which are divided at the edges of short vanes into partial streams a, b and c, d respectively. These are delivered to two junctions, each formed by the perpendicularly abutting edges of two vanes; one such junction can be seen at 21 in Fig. 4. Here a, c and b, d are combined and the combined streams again subdivided into partial streams a<SP>1</SP>, b<SP>1</SP>, and c<SP>1</SP>, d<SP>1</SP>. The process may be repeated any desired number of times and the partial streams then emited and discharged. Between two junctions the cross-sections of the passages vary from a rectangle through a square at opposite corners of the conduit to a rectangle with its long dimension perpendicular to the original direction.
