Abstract

883,881. Pulp-thickening device. BAUER BROS. CO. March 18, 1960 [March 27, 1959], No. 9761/60. Class 96. In a continuously operable press for removing fluid, e.g. water, from pulp, the pulp suspension is fed under pressure (Fig. 2) through an inlet passage 32 into a base chamber 28 and is conveyed upwardly, or horizontally if the device be so arranged, into and through a passage 88 (Fig. 1) by feed screws 16, 17 comprising contrarotating, oppositely-sloping, and interfitting helicoid surfaces 68, 69 arranged on parallel shafts 66, 67, the fluid expressed escaping through vertical slots between triangularly sectioned rods 62 (Fig. 2) whose apices point outward and flat inner surfaces are scraped by the screws, of a cage-like housing comprised of arcuate sections 55, 56 clamped together, the fluid flowing downwardly into a space 29 (Fig. 2) having an outlet 34. The device is enclosed by an outer jacket comprising mating half-cylindrical members 45, 46 clamped together, and an upper closure plate 51 which supports a housing 75, of reduced cross-section to assist in compression of the pulp, and fluid removal therefrom, which terminates in a discharge duct 74. A motor 24 connected through gearing and a chain rotates cog-wheels 18, 19 on stub shafts 14, 15 at the ends of the feed screw shafts 66, 67.
