Abstract

In manufacturing porous barriers, e.g. for use in the isotopic separation of gases, one or more metal oxides, e.g. alumina, titanium dioxide, magnesia, zirconia, are admixed with an organic binder, e.g. terpineol/ceresine admixture, aqueous polyvinyl alcohol solution, aqueous gum tragacanth gel, petroleum jelly, paraffin oil, and the resultant paste shaped, e.g. extruded in to a tube, and then sintered so as just to weld together grains in contact with one another, e.g. the shaped material may be heated for one hour at 1100 DEG to 1300 DEG C. and then quickly cooled. The mean radius of the pores in the barrier preferably ranges from 0,01 to 0,03 microns and will be approximately one-half to three-quarters of the mean radius of the metal oxide grains selected.
