Abstract

883,648. Compressed-air engines. AIRNESCO PRODUCTS Ltd. June 8, 1960, No. 20215/60. Classes 122 (2) and 122 (3). A fluid-pressure operated vibrator in which a piston 5 is reciprocated in a cylinder 1 by air pressure alternately admitted to and exhausted from opposite ends of the cylinder by way of ports 6, 6<SP>1</SP>, 16 controlled by reciprocation of the piston has an opening at one end (as distinct from at one side) of the cylinder for the admission of fluid pressure, and the other end of the cylinder is adapted for connection to a brush or other accessory. The cylinder 1 is closed at its ends by detachable plugs 2, 3, of which the plug 3 has a screwed socket 10 for receiving the fluid pressure line and the other plug 2 has a screwed boss 8 for the attachment through a coupling 9 of the accessory. Mounted within the cylinder and located in bores 14 in the end plugs 2, 3 is a tube 13 having a duct 12 which at one end communicates with the inlet socket 10 and terminates in an axially-extending groove 15 for co-operation with the port 16 provided in the piston. The piston 5 has a bore 17 to enable it to slide over the tube 13 and a second bore 18 housing two tubular inserts 20, 20<SP>1</SP> separated by a central valve chamber 23 receiving a valve element 25 for co-operation alternately with seating surfaces on the ends of the two inserts. In operation, if the valve element 25 is seated against the insert 20, air from the inlet socket 10 will pass through the tube 13, groove 15, port 16 and insert 20<SP>1</SP> into the space A2 at one end of the cylinder causing the piston to move towards the end plug 2. At the time when the piston closes the exhaust port 6, the port 16 moves beyond the end of the groove 15 and the air trapped in the space A1 is compressed so as to cause the valve element 25 to seal against the insert 20<SP>1</SP> to reverse the action. The tube 13 instead of being cylindrical may be of rectangular cross-section and disposed within a corresponding slot in the periphery of the piston, or the tube 13 may be dispensed with and the supply duct then constituted by a bore in the wall of the cylinder.
