Abstract

882,394. Valves. SHEARDOWN, J. M. April 30, 1958 [May 1, 1957], No. 13918/57. Class 135. A slow-closing tap in which the closure member, having a sealing ring 12 coacting with a seat 11, is opened against a spring 14 by depression of a knob 7 has a resilient cupwasher 18 operating in a chamber 17 on the downstream side of the seat 11 so that the rate of closure of the valve is determined by escape of water from the chamber above the cupwasher through a passage controlled by a needle valve 25 which can be adjusted after removal of a screw 9. The outlet spout 3 is shaped so that the chamber 17 is always full of water. In a modification the chamber 17 is formed in an extension of the bonnet 4 and is sealed at its lower end around the valve stem to constitute a closed dashpot filled, preferably, with distilled water. Also described are a selfpriming tube for the chamber 17 in a tap for horizontal installation, a notch in the wall of the chamber 17 to obtain accelerated closure as the closure member approaches its seat, and a spring-loaded valve which engages the seat when the main closure member is removed.
