Class 39(4) In a reactor having fuel members enclosed in protective sheaths and a closed coolant circuit whose coolant gas reacts with the fuel, a minor proportion of a gas inert to the fuel is added to the coolant. If a leak appears in the sheath, coolant entering it is absorbed by reaction with the fuel, leaving a blanket of the inert gas which eventually stops further entry of coolant. A CO 2 coolant could include 0.1% to 1% by weight of He. The inert gas could be N 2 where the fuel is protected by a nitride layer.
