Abstract

882,087. Electric indicating systems. SPERRY GYROSCOPE CO. Ltd. July 23, 1959 [July 18, 1958 (5)], Nos. 23210/58, 23211/58, 23212/58, 23213/58 and 23214/58. Class 40 (1). Apparatus for indicating the level of liquid in a container comprises a float automatically maintained at a constant degree of immersion in the liquid by keeping its apparent weight constant. As shown, a float 7, partly submerged in a liquid 1, is supported from one end of a weighing team 3 by a cable 14. The weight of the cable drum 5, a motor 8 and the apparent weight of the float are together balanced by a counterweight 16. Changes in the liquid level vary the depth of submersion of the float and hence its apparent weight, whereupon the beam 3 tilts by an amount measured by inductive pick-off 17, the tilt signal being fed to motor 8 which drives the cable drum 5 to adjust the length of cable 14 until the beam is rebalanced, the rotations of motor 8 being indicated by a pointer 18. The float 7 is supported vertically under the axle 15 of the cable drum 5, in a double sleeve arrangement 21, 23 with adjustable holes 22 to prevent the apparatus from responding to rapid changes in liquid level. The beam 3 and associated apparatus is enclosed in a casing 26 filled with air or an inert gas under pressure to prevent corrosive or explosive gases from the liquid from entering, and may be supported on a wall 2 of the liquid container.
