Class 100(2) [Also in Group XXII] Apparatus for bending sheet, e.g. for the bending of printing plates for use in rotary printing presses, comprises a heated platen on which the sheet is laid, a rotatably mounted heated roller tangentially disposed to one end of the platen and having its periphery shaped to conform to the desired curvature of the bent sheet, said roller being provided with means for gripping the end of the sheet and means for rotating the roller in such manner that the gripped end of the sheet is pulled away from the platen and upwards so that when the sheet has been heated to an extent sufficient to render it soft and ductile the sheet, during continued turning of the roller, conforms to the periphery thereof. A metal sheet 20, e.g. a printing plate, is placed over a platen 25 heated by thermostatically controlled electrical elements 27 and its end is clamped at 22 to a drum 15, heated by electrical elements 23, a heat shield 29 is then placed over the sheet the surface of which is contacted by a temperature sensing device 30. When the metal of the sheet has been softened the roller 15 is rolled along a base plate 11 which supports the platen 25 so that the sheet is wrapped to cylindrical form around the roller. The roller 15 is supported through links 16, by a carriage 14 running along the base plate 11, a gear on the roller engaging a rack on the base .11. A heat shield 24 extends around part of the roller 15. The diameter of the roller may be slightly greater where the sheet is wrapped around than at the ends which engage the base plate. The surface of the roller may be profiled.
