Abstract
881,837. Electromedical apparatus. DE GROFF, M. E. Jan. 24, 1958 [Jan. 31, 1957], No. 2487/58. Class 81 (2). Electromedical apparatus by which a patient may be treated simultaneously by ultrasonic mechanical vibrations and low-voltage oscillations comprises a lower voltage generator and an ultrasonic generator and applicator means connected with each generator. The low-voltage generator includes an oscillator tube 46 (Fig. 6) and an electric timing motor 48 energized through an input transformer 81 from a mains supply to which the device is connected by a plug 16 (Fig. 7). Pairs of electrode pads 40, 42 (Fig. 6) for applying low-voltage oscillations to the patient are connected to the oscillator tube 46 through a transformer 50, a selector switch 64 (Fig. 7) and microswitches 56, 58, 62, 70, 72, (Fig. 6) which are controlled by cams 52, 54, 60, 66, 68 respectively, the cams being rotated by the motor and being shaped so that the frequency of opening and closing of each microswitch differs from the others. According to the setting of the selector switch the microswitch and other components of the apparatus are selectively brought into the pad circuits so that one or both pairs of pads are supplied with electrical oscillations in pulses of 1 second or 3 seconds duration, as " tetanise " current (i.e. audio-frequency oscillations superimposed on rectified half waves), as " surge " current (i.e. " tetanise " current interrupted for periods of 4 seconds in every 10 seconds) or as pulses, " tetanise " and " surge " current successively in 3-minute cycles. The ultrasonic generator includes a full-wave voltage doubler 20 (Fig. 8) and an oscillator 18 which are energized by the mains supply through a transformer 24. The output of the ultrasonic generator is applied to a quartz crystal 22 (Fig. 9) in a sound head 12 through a coaxial cable 26. The sound head easing may be connected through the casing of the apparatus to one pad of one pair of pads and used with the other pad of that pair to apply electric oscillations to the patient. Either generator may be switched off so that the patient may be treated with either electrical oscillations or mechanical energy alone.
