Abstract
<PICT:0881569/IV (a)/1> <PICT:0881569/IV (a)/2> <PICT:0881569/IV (a)/3> <PICT:0881569/IV (a)/4> A method of forming a drag reducing covering comprises feeding an uncured vulcanizable rubber 11 between a length of fabric 10 and a perforated belt 14, disposing the fabric, rubber and perforated belt between a pair of carrier belts 15, 16, subjecting the assembly to pressure, e.g. by passage through calender rolls 17, 18, to impregnate the fabric with the rubber and force the rubber into the perforations of the perforated belt, thereafter curing the rubber, e.g. in oven 19 and cooling chamber 20, stripping the carrier belts and perforated belt to leave a resilient rubber impregnated fabric layer having a multitude of spaced resilient rubber stubs 12 extending from one surface. The fabric may be omitted from the process, thus producing a stubby surfaced resilient rubber layer. A stripping agent, e.g. a silicone oil such as methylpolysiloxane, which is tacky at ambient temperatures and loses its adhesiveness after heating may be interposed between the perforated belt and the carrier belt whereby the said belts stick together as the rubber is forced into the perforations but may be easily stripped after the rubber is cured. The perforated and carrier belts may be made of polyethylene terephthalate or stainless steel. The rubber may be natural or synthetic, e.g. a polyurethane made from poly(ethylene/propylene adipate) and toluene 2,4 di-isocyanate. The taxtile fabric may be nylon. Specification 881,570 is referred to.
