Abstract

The invention comprises saturated tricyclic ethers of the general formula <FORM:0881535/IV (b)/1> in which both the symbols R represent methyl or one represents methyl and the other hydrogen. They may be prepared by cyclising a compound of formula <FORM:0881535/IV (b)/2> or <FORM:0881535/IV (b)/3> by heating in the presence of an acid dehydration catalyst and, in the case of a compound of the latter formula, catalytic hydrogenation of the double bond. The diols used as starting materials may be obtained by condensation of myrcene with either citraconic or pyrocinchonic anhydride followed by cyclisation and reduction. Alternatively, the diols may be prepared by treating a lactone of formula <FORM:0881535/IV (b)/4> or <FORM:0881535/IV (b)/5> with sodium and an alcohol.ALSO:Tricyclic ethers of general formula <FORM:0881535/VI/1> in which both the symbols R represent methyl groups or one represents methyl and the other hydrogen (see Group IV (b)), are used for perfuming materials or articles.
