880,978. Indicating liquid level. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Dec. 3, 1959 [Jan. 27, 1959], No. 2988/59. Class 40 (1). A conducting probe 4 carried by a wire from a drum 1 driven by a reversible D.C. motor 6 is controlled to heat at the surface of a liquid 5 with the aid of a relay such as an A.C. excited thyratron 19 which is normally non-conducting and conducts when the probe makes contact with the liquid surface and so grounds the control grid. When the thyratron conducts, the effective field of the motor is reversed by winding 15 and the motor drives the probe clear of the liquid, the extent of the hunting excursions being governed by an eddy current brake 13. Motor 6 also drives an indicator 27 through a selsyn link and a lost-motion coupling 24 which prevents the indicator from following the hunting movements of the motor. To ensure that the lost motion and hunting motion have the same extent, a rheostat 14 adjusts the excitation of the eddy current brake. The indicator pointer 26 makes a number of revolutions indicated by a counter 28. With the aid of reversing switches, the probe may be made to locate a datum position 29.
