Abstract

880,711. A.C. generators. KOBER, W. Feb. 10, 1958, No. 4231/58. Class 35. The planar air-gap of an A.C. generator is automatically adjusted in length to give constant output voltage irrespective of changes in load, speed or power factor. As shown in Fig. 6 for a permanent magnet generator, the machine is adjusted for load by mounting the stator on pins 8 riding in helical slots 9 against spring- restraint 14, so that the load torque closes the air gap. Modifications are described in which the stator is carried on a screw thread or on pivoted links, or rides on axial cam surfaces against spring pressure. Fig. 13 shows an additional arrangement in which the rotor 3 is axially adjusted on flexure discs 25 under the influence of fly-balls 26 to provide speed compensation. It is described how the torque and speed compensation motions can be built into the rotor, and the stator may be manually adjustable to set the initial voltage value, or electromagnetic means (Fig. 16 not shown) may be employed to give power-factor compensation. Specification 786,541 is referred to.
