Abstract

880,537. Filters and coalescers. FAUDI FEINBAU G.m.b.H. April 5, 1960 [April 13, 1959], No. 11947/60. Class 46. In a filter which includes filter layers of different pore size, the pore size of the layer which is to be passed through first by the liquid is approximately fifty to one hundred and fifty times, preferably one hun dred times, greater than the minimum size of the particles to be held back by the filter. Liquid fuel admitted at 3, Fig. 1, to the left of a partition 8 has solids removed from it, and water in it coalesced, by structures 10. Purified fuel is discharged at 7 whilst water drains out at 5 and air or gas released from the fuel is discharged at 6. To dissipate electric charges the housing 1 is earthed, and a partition 8 to which the metallic parts of the structures 10 are effectively connected is also earthed. In Fig. 2, showing one of the structures 10 a filtering layer 12 of resin-bonded mineral fibres is compressed between a pre-stressed wire helix 13 and a perforate metal tube 11, and has pores of a size one hundred times greater than the minimum size of the particles to be held back by the filter. A coalescing layer 14 surrounding the wire helix consists of resin-bonded glass fibres ; it is retained in position by a sheet of burlap 15 wound spirally to form layers and by a perforate metal cylinder 16. The ends are sealed at 19 to annular metal cups 17, 18 respectively. The structure is clamped between annular members 22 and to the partition 8 by spindle means 21, Fig. 1. In Fig. 5, the filter layer 23 consists of resin-impregnated coarse glass fibres ; the layer initially has an outside diameter greater than that of a perforate metal cylinder 25, and is pre-stressed by forcing it in to the latter, using a tapered guide member. The polymerisation of the resin is effected after this step. Surrounding the cylinder 25 is an emulsion-breaking layer 26 of glass fibre, and surrounding this again is a coalescing layer 27 (indicated by a change of direction of shading) also of glass fibre. A layer 28 of onion-bag fabric is included. The required pore size of the filter layer is determined by selection of the diameter of the fibres constituting the layer, by degree of compression of the layer, and by concentration of impregnant.
