Abstract

Methylene bis-thioglycollic acid esters of the general formula <FORM:0880421/IV (b)/1> in which R represents an alkyl or aralkyl radical are prepared by heating an alkali metal thiosulphate with an alkali metal monochloracetate in an aqueous medium at a temperature below 100 DEG C. for a period of from 15 minutes to 2 hours, thereafter condensing the carboxyalkylthiosulphonate so formed with formaldehyde in the presence of sulphuric acid for a period of from 15 minutes to 2 hours at a temperature which is maintained below 100 DEG C. during the initial and greater part of the reaction, and esterifying the condensation product with an alkyl or aralkyl alcohol in the presence of an inert solvent, such as cyclohexane and preferably with azeotropic removal of the water formed. Examples describe the preparation of the butyl and 2-ethyl hexyl esters of methylene bis-thioglycollic acid.
