An even layer of material 14 (Fig. 1), is laid in a chamber A by a wall 32 which can be moved along the length of the conveyer and which carries a spreading device 11. The wall may also carry a conveyer 26 for discharging the container. In the form illustrated the device 11 is an unenclosed screw conveyer which receives material through any of several closable hoppers 15 (Fig. 2), spaced along the container and fed by a screw conveyer 6. The wall 32 (Fig. 1), and screw 11 are mounted on a carriage 8 propelled along rails 10 by rollers 9 which are driven either under manual control from a seat 23 or automatically, under the control of devices which sense when the material at the end remote from the hoppers 15 has reached the level of the screw 11. A trimming blade 13 mounted behind the screw 11 may be capable of adjustment to provide a thinner level of material. The unloading conveyer 26 is also a screw and delivers the material from both sides of the container to a slot 28 (Fig. 2), in the floor through which the material falls to a conveyer 27. The slot 28 is normally closed, and a sliding partition 25 (Fig. 1), prevents material reaching the conveyer 26 while the container is being loaded. The invention may be applied to chambers for treating grain or malt.
