Abstract

879,719. Liquid-releasing apparatus for gas systems. WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO. Ltd., SIMMONS, A. W., and WASHBOURN, J. June 12, 1958 [June 28, 1957], No. 20448/57. Class 64(2) [Also in Groups XXVIII and XXXIV] In a compressed-air braking-system, water from an air reservoir 15 (passed through a filter 18 and a chamber 17) is released to atmosphere through a port 21 by reciprocation of a valve member having a stem 24 and a plug 25 between a small piston 22 and a large piston 23. To the end face of the piston 23 is applied a fluctuating pressure (from a point between the compressor and unloader valve or from a governor) and when a pressure equal to the reservoir pressure is applied, the valve member moves to the left because of the difference of piston areas until the piston 22 leaves its bore 19 and enters the chamber 17. Water then enters the space 26 around the stem 24. When the pressure on the large piston 23 drops, the valve member moves back to the position shown, passing through an intermediate position in which the space 26 is cut off from communication with both the chamber 17 and the outlet 21 by the piston 22 and the plug 25 respectively. In a modification Fig. 2 (not shown), the piston 22 moves into a tubular guide in the chamber 17, the outlet 21 has a perforated plug and there is an orificed plate adjacent the end face of the large piston 23 to reduce the velocity of the valve member. The Provisional Specification describes also a valve member which is spring- loaded. Refrence has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 629,592.
