A method of forming a domed member from sheet or plate metal comprises fabricating from the metal a fluid-tight hollow body which has an annular side wall and two opposed end walls at least one of which has a curvature less than that required in the member, locating within the body during the fabrication means for preventing contraction of the side wall and inflating the body to increase the curvature of said one end wall to that required in the member. In an embodiment the curved edges 3, 4 of two slightly dished plates 1, 2 preformed from a plurality of steel panels 5 are welded to a circular cast iron die ring 6 provided with a peripheral groove 7 and radial apertures 8. Fluid pressure is supplied to the so-formed hollow body through an inlet 9 to inflate the plates to the required spheroidal shape after which the body is cut in two around the annular wall 10 to provide two similar domed members for use as the ends of a pressure vessel. The dish-shaped blanks may each be fabricated from a plurality of steel plates to provide a laminated structure. In another embodiment two discs 11 and 12 are welded around opposite edges of an annular side wall 13 of U-shaped cross-section the die ring 6 being disposed within the side wall (Fig. 5). The die ring may comprise two hollow tubes 6a separated by spacers 6b and strengthened by web plates 6c (Fig. 7). The inflated hollow body containing the latter type die ring may constitute a pressure vessel of spheroidal shape in which the tubes 6a are used for cooling fluid or fluid to be preheated. Alternatively, the tubes 6a of the die ring are replaced by mild steel rings separated by a spacer of lesser diameter to provide a peripheral groove. The rigidity of the domed end walls is increased by welding to the outer surface a series of circular plates 15 or a cruciform bulkhead to the inner surface of said walls. In a further embodiment the hollow body is wholly sealed and then expanded by the ignition of a slow-burning explosive, e.g. cordite, located therein.
