Abstract
879,530. Percussive tools. WARSOP POWER TOOLS Ltd. Feb. 17, 1958 [Feb. 15, 1957], No. 5279/57. Class 124. A rock drill comprises a tool holder, a hammer having a stem cooperating by splines with a sleeve formed with a ratchet wheel and with the tool holder, one spline being axial and the other helical, a first member movable between a position permitting a pawl to engage the ratchet wheel and a position preventing such engagement, and a second member movable between a position preventing rotation of the tool holder and a position permitting the tool holder to rotate. As shown, a ratchet 5 formed on a sleeve 4 co-operating with helical splines on the stem of a hammer may be engaged by two pawls 28 and 30 when a half-ring 32 of wire having its ends turned axially, is in the position shown. On moving a finger-grip 38, attached to a loop 34 on the wire, to the right in Fig. 2, the ends of the wire engage the pawls and prevent them from making contact with the ratchet. In order to prevent rotation of the tool holder, a pin 48 having a head 50 is rotatably and longitudinally movable in a bore just intersecting the tool holder. A cut out portion 58 in the pin, Fig. 5, allows the tool holder to rotate, but on turning the pin through 180 degrees and moving it to the right a taper portion 56 wedges the tool holder and prevents its rotation. The head 50 may cooperate with the outer surface 60 of the housing to set the pin in the position in which the cut away portion allows rotation of the tool holder.
