Abstract

879,503. Stuffing-box substitutes. FEDERALMOGUL-BOWER BEARINGS Inc. April 20, 1960, No. 13915/60. Class 122 (5). Sealing means between relatively rotatable outer and inner members, for example a wheel hub 40 and its axle housing 45, comprises a metal casing 13 rotatable with the outer member 40 and supporting in fluid-tight manner a sealing element 24 having a flexible lip 25 in rubbing sealing contact with a cylindrical surface 34 of a sleeve 12 comprising an outer steel &c. wear ring 32 frictionally secured to the inner member 45 by a rubber &c. lining 33. The casing 13 is a press fit in a bore in the hub 40 and comprises inner and outer elements 14, 15 held together by a rolled-over portion 23 of the outer element and clamping between them a radial web 26 of the sealing element 24. The web 26 is reinforced by a rigid ring 27 and a garter spring 31 presses the lip 25 against the surface 34. The lining 33 extends at one end 38 over the ring 32 and at its other end is formed with a lead-on portion 36 to facilitate insertion on the axle. The outer diameter of the sleeve 12 is greater than the bores 18 and 20 of the casing elements 14 and 15 respectively whereby the sleeve is held captive in the casing. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the sealing element is bonded to the casing.
