Abstract
879,393. Air-conditioning control systems. SPECIALTIES DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Dec. 4, 1959 [Dec. 17, 1958], No. 41233/59. Class 118. An air-conditioning control system comprises means for generating and transmitting an ultrasonic signal, a microphone to detect the signal and means responsive to the difference in amplitude between the generated and received signals which serves to control the air conditioner. An oscillator 10, Fig. 1, for example a self-blocking Hartley type, Fig. 2 (not shown), which generates pulses at a frequency of 60 kc/s. at one second intervals, has its output electrically connected to a transmitter 11 which radiates ultrasonic energy into the enclosure 12. The amount of energy absorbed varies with the number of people in the enclosure and also with the amount of carbon dioxde present, as the radiated energy is of such a frequency as to be sensitive to the molecular relaxation of the air diluted gas. A microphone 13 receives the radiated signal and gives an electrical output to the amplifier 14. The transmitter and microphone may be electroacoustical transducers and the amplifier 14 a simple R.C. coupled adjustable gain type, Fig. 3 (not shown), so that the amplitude of the received signal can be adjusted and passed to a detector 15 together with a selected portion of the generated signal. The detector 15, Fig. 4 (not shown), is arranged to have an output proportional to the difference in amplitude between the generated and received signals by feeding a fixed portion of the generated signal to a rectifier across which a positive D.C. voltage is developed with respect to earth and the output from amplifier 14 is connected to a second rectifier across which a negative D.C. voltage is developed, the two voltages being added and the output applied to an amplifier 16 connected to a control device 17. The device 17 has an output capable of adjusting the controls of the air conditioning means 18, for example the speed of an air blower. If a large enclosure is to be ventilated it may be divided into sections, each section having its own air conditioning unit with a common central, transmitter, Fig. 7 (not shown). Specification 832,847 is referred to.
