Abstract

878,913. Sterile packings. EVERETT & CO. Ltd., S. & R. J. Jan. 11, 1960 [Jan. 12, 1959], No. 1086/59. Class 81 (1). [Also in Group XVII] A method for the sterile packing of a surgical or hypodermic article comprises the enclosing of the article in a pack that is sealed except for a restricted opening which is such as to allow the passage of air and a sterilizing gas but nevertheless acts as a trap for excluding bacteria, exhausting the air from the pack and then introducing a sterilizing gas. Hypodermic needles 3, Fig. 1, are placed in trays 2 of polythene-coated aluminium foil over which is placed a transparent sheet 4 of polythene-coated material, a textile thread 5 being sandwiched between the two before they are heat sealed together. Air passages between the twisted strands of the thread 5 allow the air to be exhausted from the pack and the sterilizing gas to be introduced whilst preventing subsequent ingress of bacteria. The thread 5 may be treated with an indicator that changes colour on exposure to ethylene oxide, thus indicating whether the pack has been sterilized when this gas is used for sterilizing purposes.
