878,504. Venting; tapping bottles. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Oct. 30, 1959 [Nov. 4, 1958], No. 35457/58. Class 21. [Also in Groups XXIII, XXVIII and XL(a)] An apparatus for removing liquid from bottles 1 having selfsealing rubber caps 2 comprises a transparent shroud 3 into which the head of each bottle may be inserted, a hollow piercing member 4 within the shroud 3, and a draw-off tube 6 that can then be lowered through the piercing member 4 with a clearance allowing venting of the bottle as it is emptied. As shown the shroud 3 is held stationary by a support 7, and the contents of the bottle 1 are to be transferred to a test tube 22 clamped between a head 13 and a spring biassed plate 17. The bottle 1 is inserted in the shroud 3 so that the member 4 pierces the cap 2, and a block 10 carrying the draw-off tube 6 and the head 13 is lowered such that the tube 6 enters the bottle 1 via the piercing member 4. A tube 15 passing through the head 13 is then placed in communication with a vacuum to draw liquid out of the bottle 1, up the draw-off tube 6 and into the test tube 22. In a modified construction the transparent shroud includes an inner ring and an outer ring, coaxial with the shroud and interconnected by rods passing through the upper face of the shroud 3. As a bottle enters the shroud 3 it pushes the inner ring, and hence the outer ring, upwardly. To eject an empty bottle from the shroud the upper ring and the shroud are moved towards each other. In a further construction, Fig 3, (not shown), the upper end of the piercing member 4 terminates as a conical inlet such that after a draw-off tube 6 has been withdrawn from the piercing member 4 a tube supplying washing water can be lowered via the concical inlet into the piercing member 4 to supply washing water to the bottle. The tube supplying washing water is then removed and the drawoff tube 6 reinserted in the member 4 so that the washing water can be removed via the tube 6. Specification 862,680 is referred to.
