Abstract

878,191. Jet-propulsion nozzles. VICKERS AIRCRAFT HOLDINGS Ltd., and RICHARDS, E. J. Oct. 14, 1959 [Aug. 18, 1958], No. 26462/58. Class 110 (3). In a gas-turbine jet-propulsion engine, the jet nozzle outlet has a large width to depth ratio, and the nozzle is combined with an air-induction casing arranged to surround the nozzle and of such a length as to cause ambient air to be drawn in and entrained with the gas discharge. The propulsion nozzle 10 is of circular section at its upstream end 101 and of rectangular section at its outlet 102. The nozzle is enclosed within a nacelle 11, the upper and lower walls of which terminate at 111, while the side walls thereof terminate level with the nozzle outlet 102. The air induction casing associated with the nozzle is shown in its retracted or inoperative position in Fig. 1 in full lines and in its projected or effective position in chain-dotted lines, and comprises upper and lower fairing members 15 and side plates 14 connected together to form an open-ended casing which is disposed around the nozzle 10. The upper and lower members 15 are of aerofoil or tapered cross-section and when in the projected position afford, together with upper and lower edges of the nozzle 10, openings C through which air is drawn to be entrained with the discharging gases thereby producing a noise suppression effect. The side plates 14 of the induction casing are disposed in the spaces between the side walls 112 of the nacelle and the side walls of the nozzle and are supported by means of rollers 13 which are movable in channel-section members 12 secured one to each of the side walls 112. A cable 17 is secured to the rollers 13 and threaded around pulleys 16, the movable element 181 of a fluid-pressure pressure ram 18 being connected to the cable, so that movement of the ram in the direction B causes the induction casing to be moved from the retracted to the projected position. The jet nozzle may be of elliptical instead of rectangular section; also a series of nozzles may be disposed side-by-side, a single induction casing being associated with the nozzles.
