Abstract
Citric acid is obtained by a fermentation process which comprises culturing the strain Penicillium adameizi Zaleski Var Kuensanii or Penicillium restrictum Giilman and Abbott Var Kuensanii A.T.C.C. No. 13155 under submerged aerobic conditions in sugar-containing nutrient medium. The sugar is defined as sucrose or a sucrose-containing material and raw sugar or molasses may be used without further purification to remove inorganic substances. The two penicillium strains are stated to be new and their bacteriological features are described. Examples are given, the culture media in the case of the first mentioned strain comprising black strap molasses, NH4NO3 and CaCO3 and in the case of the second mentioned strain the following culture media are specified: (a) refined white sugar or raw sugar, MgSO47H2O, KH2PO4 and CaCO3, (b) beet molasses or black strap molasses, NH4NO3 and CaCO3. In each case fermentation is carried out under submerged aerobic conditions at 28 DEG C. at an initial pH of between 7.20 and 7.30.
