Abstract

877,738. Reciprocating pumps. GLACIER METAL CO. Ltd. Feb. 18, 1960 [March 5, 1959 ; July 31, 1959], Nos. 7761/59 and 26398/59. Class 102(1). [Also in Group XXXIV] A crankcase 40 has an oil sump 41 with a rotary pump 13 therein which supplies oil to a delivery passage 15 provided with a spring- pressed relief valve 16. The pump 13 is driven by one end of a shaft 17 the other end of which extends into a casing 18 and has a gear thereon engaging a gear on a shaft 21. Cams 20, on the shaft 21, operate plunger-type pumps 19 which are in direct communication with the delivery passage 15. The pumps 19 supply oil to the bearings 11 via passages 23, and to the big-end bearings 8 via passages 23a, whereas the bearing 12 is connected by a passage 24 to the passage 15. Each pump 19 has a casing with a cylinder bore 25 which opens at its lower end into a chamber 26 connected to an inlet port 27 from the passage 15 and to one of the discharge passages 23. The inlet port 27 is controlled by a poppet-type non-return valve 28 having a stem 29 urged by a spring 30 to close the valve against pressure maintained in the passage 15 by the pump 13 and relief valve 16. A piston 43 is received by the bore 25 and is secured to a crosshead 44, which is slidable in a guide 45 and is prevented from rotating by a key 46. The crosshead 44 carries a roller 30 and is urged towards one of the cams 20 by a spring 47. The delivery stroke of the plunger 43 causes an increase in pressure in the chamber 26 and the inlet valve 28 closes so that a " slug " of oil, of a volume determined by the diameter and stroke of the plunger 43, will be forced at increased pressure through one of the discharge passages 23 to the main bearing 11 and its associated big-end bearing 8.
